Last week was a special week for both Blizzard and MOBA fans as the developer finally flipped the “full release” switch for its MOBA title Heroes of the Storm. The game contains many of the usual MOBA trappings including a large roster of different playable heroes (all of whom hail from established Blizzard IP’s), an in-game shop where players can purchase new heroes, skins, and other items, and team-based competitive gameplay that offers a streamlined experience that caters equally to newbies and MOBA veterans.

Also like past MOBA’s such as League of Legends and Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm has a co-op vs. Mode that allows players to play against A.I.-controlled teams. While this mode is usually meant as a way to ease players in as they learn the basics, Heroes of the Storm’s implementation actually allows its co-op vs. Mode to serve as a fully-functionable alternative to the standard competitive modes, albeit with a few caveats. Incentivized Learning.

Obviously the co-op vs. Mode is a great first stop for those who are unfamiliar with MOBA’s or with Heroes of the Storm’s unique gameplay elements and, unlike the co-op vs. Modes found in popular MOBA’s like League of Legends and Dota 2, it actually rewards players who participate with both experience points and gold (the latter of which serves as the game’s free-to-play currency). Obviously it doesn’t reward as much experience and gold as can be earned in the competitive quick matches (victory in a co-op game awards ten gold while winning a quick match awards thirty gold and losing a quick match still nets a player twenty) but it’s still better than nothing. It’s a little disappointing that Blizzard chose to buy into the “co-op players don’t deserve equal rewards as competitive players” mentality that has been established by virtually every competitive multiplayer game in existence, especially since, under the right circumstances, A.I. Teams can prove to be just as much of a challenge as actual human opponents (more on that later).

Of course, Blizzard could just have easily decided not to give co-op players any rewards at all so I’m certainly not going to complain too loudly. I’m also impressed that Blizzard went one step further and made it so that the game’s daily quests (which offer a variety of tasks such as playing games as certain types of heroes or as heroes from a specific IP and award gold upon completion) can be completed in co-op vs. A Little Help from My Friends. Another handy feature of Heroes of the Storm’s co-op vs. Mode is that it allows you to pick between playing with actual human teammates or playing with a team of A.I. Each option has its own benefits and potential risks.

Playing with human teammates ups your chance of victory but playing with random human teammates also ups your risk of getting matched with a teammate who is less than pleasant to deal with (yes, rage-quitters, trolls, and bad sports sadly show up in co-op games as well). On the other hand, playing with A.I.

Teammates completely negates the risks of dealing with random jerks but because there’s no way for you to pick which heroes your A.I. Teammates play as, the risk of getting matched against a superior team composition and getting steamrolled is also much higher.Personally, I prefer to play with A.I. In addition to the risk of getting matched with jerks, playing with human teammates tends to trivialize the A.I. Team’s difficulty (though, again, the fact that you can’t coordinate hero selection with your team has led me to lose the occasional co-op game even with human teammates). I’d rather play an engaging match where I had a real risk of losing but didn’t have to worry about my teammates bad-mouthing either me or each other, even if it meant the risk of not earning any gold if I lost (plus, I still earn experience points regardless).

It would be nice if Blizzard allowed players to see what heroes their teammates were picking so they could pick accordingly but, as it stands, Heroes of the Storm’s current co-op vs. System could be a lot worse.

Room to Grow. I’m fairly certain that improving Heroes of the Storm’s co-op vs.

Mode isn’t a high priority for Blizzard but that doesn’t mean I can’t speculate on some of the potential changes that could be made. For instance, the game’s built-in pinging system currently allows for some pretty advanced coordination, even when playing with A.I.

Using pings, players can direct A.I. Teammates to hotspots like capturable mercenary camps or map-specific objectives and can even have an A.I.

The

Team member directly follow them (handy if you have a healer or a tank on your team). If Blizzard wanted to make the pinging system more robust, perhaps we could one day direct A.I. Teammates to specific lanes on a map or assign different prioritized tasks to specific teammates (“focus on pushing top lane but take the objective if an opportunity presents itself”).I also wouldn’t complain if Blizzard upped the rewards slightly for playing co-op matches, maybe twenty gold for winning and ten for losing? I understand Blizzard doesn’t want to make gold acquisition too easy (they want you spending real money in the shop after all) but it seems only fair considering the game’s matchmaking system can potentially place you in an unwinnable match, especially if you choose to play with A.I.

Even without these proposed changes however, Heroes of the Storm’s co-op vs. Mode is still one of the best that any MOBA has to offer, especially since the game is already positioned as a MOBA for more casual players. If you’ve been put off by the more hardcore competitive vibe of MOBA games in the past, Heroes of the Storm’s co-op vs. May not be the most ideal solution, but it could definitely make a MOBA fan out of you yet.

We’ve decided to make a change to how Reckless Experimenter functions due to an unwanted interaction with SN1P-SN4P that allows for an early-game infinite damage combo in Priest decks.
