Forum Thread: What is the purpose behind this guideWith SKSE64 and the development towards STEP 3.0 still a long way off, many users are itching to have something that is even remotely based on STEP for Skyrim Special Edition. This guide will be a bridge for these users. The only difference is I, Tech, will be applying my own twists into the mix. I've wanted to do something similar for a while now so this will be a good introduction for that. Later when STEP 3.0 is released, I will have my own Pack for classic Skyrim which will be something similar to what is found here.The additions and/or changes provided in this guide will not be a far off shoot from vanilla or the STEP Mandate/philosophy; however, there are certain areas and aspects of the game I, personally, feel need more attention than STEP can obtain due to the Mandates. It's within these areas where users will find the customization this guide provides.What to expect from this guideFrom this guide you can expect to view the game from my perspective.

My main guiding philosophy for enhancement is any mod that enhances the ambiance and atmosphere of the Old Kingdom from a lore prospective is a good mod for this guide; Skyrim is a cold and mountainous region of Tamriel so this theme will be maintained throughout. The secondary part of this philosophy will be a focus on realism. I know all the arguments towards the statement I just made so no need to post about that in the forums. Let me explain what realism means to me.Realism is a funny word to connect to a game with magic and all sorts of fantasy creatures, races, etc. However, many individuals take the word far too literally when trying to apply it to an alternate world, in this case the game world.

Realism in a game world is anything that would make that world feel more realistic to the player. This is accomplished by using the known world (real world) as a reference for applying concepts to what would be expected in the game world; not by forcing literal transfers of concepts into that world. More simply put, the real world is only the reference to pull from, not the bible to follow. Following these philosophies there will not be any anime NPCs, bloomed-out lighting, over-saturated textures, pretty hair styles, summer conversion mods, etc. Found in this guide. The Old Kingdom will be presented in a lore-friendly, cold, and rugged concept as it's meant to be.With that said, for users who haven't played Special Edition yet, its 'vanilla' is a little bit different from the classic Skyrim vanilla everyone is used to.

I have played a fair amount of SSE using just the basics (unofficial patch, SMIM, etc.) so I have a good idea of what vanilla for Skyrim SE is. The single largest change most users will notice is the change in lighting. SSE lighting is vastly different from classic Skyrim.

Playing Skyrim SE with vanilla lighting is almost akin to playing classic Skyrim with an ENB installed. Franky, I have a hard time returning to classic Skyrim after playing so much of SSE, simply due to the new lighting being far better. Therefore, users may feel like the Weather and Lighting section of this guide changes the lighting too far away from vanilla, but I assure everyone, it does not. What it does do is make the dungeons darker than what most users experienced in classic Skyrim. Users installing this section of the guide will need to bring a torch! Or for the mages out there, learn Candlelight early in the game!What NOT to expect from this guideHand-holding. Users should have general knowledge of modding before attempting this guide.

This guide uses Wrye Bash as the mod manager and it has a bit of a learning curve. With that said, I will show users the basics at the time which they will need to know them (like installing a mod). However, I'll only do this once.

After the initial instruction users are expected to have the gist of the how-to, therefore, I will not repeat myself and I will not answer support questions for something that is already explained. That's not to be 'mean' or 'rude'. I simply don't have the time to put into support like the authors of the other guides on STEP do.Also as explained above, users should not expect a 'fantasy overhaul'. I'm a purist, for the most part, so users shouldn't expect too much deviation from the vanilla style in all aspects.With that said, I've made the guide as easy to install as possible. I've purposefully excluded any mods which require any sort of porting to Special Edition.

This means the mods listed are typically just download, install, and move on. No hassling with the CK. No jumping through hoops to get animations to work.

If the mod didn't work by simply installing it, it wasn't included. This is the reason users may notice some mods, which work in SSE, are not included; because they contained a plugin or archive that required extra work/porting. On top of this, if a mod was badly structured for installation with Wrye Bash, I took the time to completely restructure the mod, update the FOMOD, write a wizard, and offered it to the author for uploading. This was to make it easier for users to install these mods without having to extract, rearrange, and repack them just to get WB to install them properly.System RequirementsTo play Skyrim Special Edition in all its glory (ultra), users are going to need a better system than what the average user has for playing classic Skyrim.

Since users tend to be naive about what their system can do, lets put this into perspective. Classic Skyrim's recommended video card is at least a GTX 260. Special Edition's recommended video card is at least a GTX 780. That is a six generation leap! Not to mention the GTX 780 is the second most powerful card in its generation. Those recommendations are just for playing the base game, though.

When you add modding on top of that, most users are going to need a GTX 970 or higher to stay within acceptable framerates. Mobile users should also be aware that the mobile versions of cards do not stack up evenly with their desktop counterparts. Mobile cards tend to run at least one generation slower than their desktop equivalents. Users should be fully aware of and understand these facts before continuing.This guide is set up for playing with my specific system in mind.

I'm running a GTX 1060 and maintain framerates in the 50 to 60 FPS range with an ENB installed. Fact of the matter is, SSE has new graphical effects and options that will push most systems further than classic Skyrim can; especially the god rays.

Users who can run classic Skyrim with an ENB Preset and still achieve playable frame rates will have an easier time running Skyrim Special Edition on the highest settings.Finally, SSE is meant to be a higher quality, more modern version of Skyrim. Therefore, mod installations will mainly focus on the higher quality options to stick with this theme.

Users can, of course, chose lower quality options for texture replacers. There are no hard requirements, unless stated, preventing users from installing the lower quality options.

But if users want SSE in all its glory, 'your mama's potato that you're playing classic Skyrim on just isn't going to cut it for this guide!' For comparison, users can view my system hardware here:. Check here before reporting any issues.Pre Guide WorkThere are a few things that need to be completed before starting this guide. Most of these things should already be completed, but if they are not, please do so.Game SetupIf it is not, Steam should be installed to a location not affected by User Account Control (UAC).

This is typically a place outside of C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86). A separate hard drive, preferably a SSD, is recommended.

If a separate drive is not available, a separate partition on a single hard drive is the second best option. If neither options are available, using the root of the system drive is recommended: C:Steam. If Steam is already installed to a UAC controlled area, users can move the install by following the instructions here:.Once the game is installed, users will need to complete an initial setup:. Launch Skyrim Special Edition from within Steam.

Accept any default settings and click Play to launch the game. Once at the main menu, exit the game to desktop. The game is now set up for modding. Notice: Modding 101Don't forget to clean the DLC with xEdit. Mod ManagerThere are two viable choices for a mod manager at this time for SSE. Those are Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) and Wrye Bash (WB).

Mod Organizer 2 is not included because it's not what I would consider a stable mod manager in its current state. For the completion of this guide either NMM or WB is recommended. Even though Wrye Bash has a high learning curve that many may find daunting, I will be focusing my efforts around modding with this manager. Nexus Mod Manager is simply not a good tool for advanced modding.Wrye BashDownload:Installation. Download the 'Wrye Bash 307 beta1 - Standalone Executable' file from Nexus.

Open the archive. Click and drag the Mopy folder into the root SSE folder (.SteamsteamappscommonSkyrim Special Edition) to extract the files into to the game's root directory. Steps #3 and 4 Other UtilitiesSince some utilities are now able to be used across multiple games, I have started organizing them on my personal system within a centralized location instead of within the game's folder. Users are not required to use my organization and may organize the utilities whichever way works best for them individually. Many of these utilities will already be installed on on the system due to their use for other games. If any of them are already installed, there is no reason to re-install them for this guide unless users wish to use a single copy of the software for each game. I find this wasteful and unnecessary so the instructions below will instruct installation for how I install the utilities.

JPEXSDownload:Download:DescriptionA program used to edit SWF files. This is needed to take care of a couple issues with SkyUI v2.2. The Runtime Environment is needed for the program to work.Java Runtime Environment. Open the link above for the Runtime Environment. Accept the license agreement for Oracle (above the download links). Download the 'Windows x64 Offline' option and run the installer.

Install the Environment to the default location.JPEXS. Download the JPEXS from the website and run the installer. Install JPEXS to the default location and allow it to create a shortcut for easy access later. JPEXS will be used after installing SkyUI. Mod InstallationBelow are the mod sections for downloading and installing individual mods.

Before that, users should familiarize themselves with how to install mods with WB and some basic information provided about the mod. I will not be explaining everything in detail so reference the as needed.

Mods should also be installed and placed under the newly created markers, in the order which they are listed below. I will go into detail on how to install the first mod below, as well as, provide a basic overview of the mod information. After this initial walk-through, users should use the same process for installing the rest of the mods listed. Detailed instructions will be given where required.Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch. Required by CR PatchDownload:DescriptionThe Unofficial Patch provides a vast array of fixes for bugs left in the vanilla game.Adding the Archive to WB.

Download the mod from Nexus using the download manually link. Cut and paste the archive into the Bash Installers folder which should still be open from the instructions above. Click on the Wrye Bash window to bring it into focus. WB will automatically detect the newly added archive.If WB wasn't already on it, click the Installers tab to see the newly added archive.The package name will be the same name as the archive. This can be changed, however, I recommend keeping it. Unless authors are simply careless (or clueless), most will include the Nexus meta data in the file name. This provides users with the Nexus ID and version of the listed mod.

This data is needed for functions like the Open at option on the right-click context menu to work. Wrye Bash Mod InformationBefore moving on lets review the provide mod and installation information. Users can click on the new archive listing and view the mod information and installation options. I am providing a brief overview of this because this information is very useful for users who wish to venture beyond the scope of this guide.The main pane on the top right comes with several tabs:GeneralProvides an overview of the mod which includes a full list of the files which will be added upon install. The list of files is determined by the Sub-Packages selected.

Sub-Packages will be covered below during mod installations.MatchedList of files that are identical to current files in the Data directory.MissingList the files that are missing from a current install of the mod. If the mod is not installed, the user will see all the files listed here.MismatchedList of files that are present in the Data directory, but aren't identical to the mod's version of those files.ConflictsLists all the files which are conflicting with the mod's files. Users should keep in mind that WB can not see into archives unless the feature is turned on.

This can be turned on by right-clicking the Installer's tab header and checking Show BSA Conflicts.UnderriddenList of files that the mod is providing, but shouldn't be because another mod installed after it should be providing listed files, but is not. Having files listed here is usually undesirable and should result in the mod's background being yellow.

This issue is corrected by right-clicking the mod listing and choosing Anneal.DirtyList of files that were previously installed, but should be removed or altered due to a change in Sub-Package options without a reinstall of the mod. Having files listed here is usually undesirable and should result in the mod's background being orange. Dirty files can be cleaned by right-clicking the mod listing and choosing Anneal.SkippedList any files which were skipped during installation due to them being unusable files. Sometime mods can be packaged with non-standard directories and these directories will be skipped. These directories can be present when an author makes a FOMOD without keeping BAIN users in mind (WB users), this making complex directories which are not BAIN compatible. In such cases, the author should be contacted and asked to make the directory structure BAIN compatible.

The other option is for users to create a BCF file which tells BAIN how to install the mod.Other Panes Sub-PackagesWhen they exist, this is where the user can select mod install options prior to installation. The mod must be packaged in the BAIN format for sub-packages to be visible. This is the area most used when installing mod options since most mods do not include wizards (Wrye Bash's version of a FOMOD).Esp/m FilterAny plugins that the mod will install is listed in this pane. Users can option to not install any of the listed plugins be unchecking the box next to it.CommentsThis area is for user comments specific to the user's local installation. Users can use this area to make notes about the mod, install options, reviews, issues, etc.

Game FixesThese are mods which provide vital fixes to buggy game elements. At this time, users should have already created the marker for this section and installed the first mod of the guide. All mods in this section should be placed under the Game Fixes marker, in the order they are listed, leaving the Unofficial Patch at the top.

Unless specific instructions are given, all mods are installed in the same manner as users were shown above. This holds true for all the following mod sections.1st Person Candlelight FixDownload:DescriptionFixes the brightness of the candlelight spell in first-person view to equal the brightness in third-person view.Installation. Unlimited Bookshelves allows as many books to fit on a single shelf as will bit, whereas in vanilla the player is limited to a set number. This is one of those mods that adds realism to the game.Usage NoteSome bookshelves that have bookshelf menus will not be set up properly with collision planes, thus allowing players to grab items directly from these bookshelves.

This can cause issues, so players are highly discouraged from doing this. Fugees blunted on reality zip. If the bookshelf has a menu, use it.Installation. Download the main file and install the mod.

Font Overhaul - Natural Typefaces for SkyrimDownload:DescriptionFont Overhaul adds new typefaces for various elements and objects, like books, notes, and menus. Graphics on the book pages have also been corrected with proper transparency so they look more natural. I have used this extensively and love the results.Compatibility NoteFor those users who insist on using the Sovngarde font mod, there is a patch provided in the Optional Files on the mod page. However, I would encourage users to at least try the menu font provided by Font Overhaul.Installation. Download the 'Font Overhaul' main file from Nexus and install.

Lore-Based Loading ScreensDownload:DescriptionThis mod adds 100+ new texts for the loading screens which are all 100% lore-based. This mod is optional for this guide, but it adds some variety to screens users will be seeing a lot.General NotesBe aware the readme provided by this mod is skipped during installation. Proper BAIN structure requires miscellaneous documents, like readmes, to be placed within a Docs folder. Chesko has his in a non-BAIN directory, thus, WB doesn't install the file.Installation. Download the mod from Nexus and install. WB WizardsInstalling SSIRT will be the first time users encounter a mod with a wizard. Wizards are Wrye Bashes version of a FOMOD.

If a mod contains a wizard, users will see a checkbox for the mod with a wand on it. User can then right-click these listings to run the wizard, which will walk users through the proper selection of the sub-packages.Wizards are far more useful for mods that have a lot of sub-packages to choose from. Most authors do not include wizards because it can be confusing to learn the code, write them, and then maintain them. SkyUIDownload:DescriptionSkyUI overhauls the inventory and other menus to make them far more useful, faster, and easier to use.

This means less time navigating Bethesda's terrible menu system and more time playing the game.Download. Download the SkyUI22 found in the Old Files section of the Nexus page.This is the only version that currently works with SSE, but requires some manual editing to get it to work correctly.Manual EditingThere are a couple good sources of information for walking users through editing SkyUI, therefore, I will not be covering this process here. Instead, users should use the sources linked below to complete this process.

Afterwards, users should return here to finish the installation.Installation. Once the manual editing is complete, users should re-archive the mod and paste it into the Bash Installers folder. Install the mod as usual. WB Info - File ConflictsAfter installing SMIM below will be the first time users will see file conflicts in Wrye Bash. Depending on how users have their conflicts showing, they should notice Ultimate HD Fire Effects checkbox icon has changed from a green plus to a yellow plus. This means there are files in another mod (in this case SMIM) which are overwriting files it also provides.

In this case, the overwrites are expected and wanted. Users should learn to look for such changes to the checkboxes so they are aware of file overwrites. Download the main file and install the mod. Enhanced Blood Textures SEDownload:DescriptionThis mod replaces blood textures with highly detailed textures. Also included are new dynamic wound types and blood splatters.Installation.

Relighting Skyrim - SSEDownload:DescriptionRelighting Skyrim will place lights at their light sources, exterior lights will cast light on the landscape, lights values are standardized and more consistent throughout the game, and it stays aligned to the vanilla style.General NoteThis mod is the chosen lighting overhaul due to the aim of correcting the lighting and nothing else. Other lighting overhauls like go beyond their scope to achieve the desired results, like editing meshes which causes a lot of compatibility issues.Installation. Download the main file and install the mod. FNISNow that all the mods are installed.

There are several steps that must be taken to make it all play nicely together. Please review each section below carefully as they are critical for a proper working game!

The first of these steps is to run FNIS.Download:. Download the main file and install the mod. Activate the newly installed FNIS plugin on the Mods tab. Open the Bash Installers folder. The following patches are provided:Conflict Resolution Patch (CR Patch)This Conflict Resolution Patch (CR Patch) is required for this guide unless user are going to be custom patching the plugins themselves. This patch resolves all the record conflicts between the mods listed in the guide and allows them to work together without any issues. A big shout-out to for creating a very good base for me to build upon when creating the CR Patch.Weather and Lighting Patch (Weather Patch)For users who have chosen to install the weather and lighting mods above, I have made a patch for use with the guide. Users who are opting for different choices for these type of mods will be on their own in regards to patching their installs.Inigo PatchThough not listed in the guide, I personally use Inigo as my follower. He is great and provides a lot of comical relief while playing.

Inigo is probably one of the best follower mods you can have. Since I'm personally using him, I went ahead and provided a patch for him that is for use with the mods listed in the guide. Currently, this is very minor patching.Lanterns of Skyrim Patch (LoS Light Patch)I created this patch to tone down the default orange tint that the lights provided by Lanterns of Skyrim produce. This is a simple change of the RGB values to add in more yellow and blue. The change reduces the harsh orange tint and brings the lights more inline with what a natural candle produces. I actually had a candle lit next to a white wall as a reference for the tint.

This isn't exact, but it's closer to a natural tint than it was. Lanterns of Skyrim is obviously required to use this patch. I've kept it separate from the CR Patch in case users want to use CLARALUX instead of LoS.Each of the patches above require various mods to be installed in order to use them. Once they are added, sort the mods and close LOOT.Building LOD with DynDOLODNow it's time to take care of those pesky LODs and make the distance views as pretty as possible. For this, DynDOLOD will be used.

It's implementation for SSE is not as robust as it is for classic Skyrim, but it's still far better than vanilla.Updating DynDOLDUsers who are installing the guide for the first time, please skip this updating process and continue below.Users who have already generated DynDOLOD and are updating will need to complete the updating process for DynDOLOD. Mod

Save the game and exit.This is the backup save just in case something goes wrong. Update to the latest DynDOLOD Standalone version; found in the Utilities section of this guide. Open the DynDOLODOutput folder found in the same place as the TexGenOutput folder above. Archive the contents of the folder and install the new mod in WB. Activate the DynDOLOD plugin on the Mods tab. Sort with LOOT. Rebuild your Bashed Patch.Bashed PatchA Bashed Patch is very important and all users should be running with one.

Bashed Patches will 'bash' together all the leveled lists in the game to work together without the need for manual patching, eliminate a few plugins by integrating them into the Patch, and allows for some user customization to the game settings. A Bashed Patch is required for this guide. On the Mods tab, right-click on Bashed Patch, 0.esp and choose Rebuild Patch.

Click OK on the new window. Click on the Tweaks Settings listing in the left pane (don't untick it!).The following adjustments are optional.

They are simply my personal preferences for the available tweaks. Right-click the listing to change the setting. Set Arrow: Recovery from Actor to 50%I make this tweak because it makes sense that you'd be able to recover more arrows form bodies than the vanilla game allows.

Set Arrow: Speed to 1.4I make this tweak because the speed at which the arrows fly is too slow to be realistic, imo. Set Crime: Alarm Distance to Custom: 1200This is changed to be in line with the mod by kryptopyr. This mod isn't included in the guide, but will be when it's ported. Set Timescale to Custom 15This tweak makes the time pass more slowly in-game, which is more realistic imo.

Click the Build Patch button at the bottom. Once finished, click OK and Yes to active the patch. Reactivate the BetterQuestObjectives.esp plugin.Note: all plugins with a plus rather than a checkbox have been integrated into the Bashed Patch and should be left as is.ENB/ReShade PresetNow is the time for users to decide if an ENB Preset will be used or not. Those users who installed the weather and lighting mods will need to ensure the ENB is compatible with these mods. ENB for SSE is not as robust and feature rich as it is for classic Skyrim so users will currently see a lot of presets with or centered around ReShade.

These are not true 'ENBs' as they are using ReShade solely, or to enhance the preset rather than relying solely on ENBSeries to accomplish their goals. I've listed a few presets below that are compatible with Vivid Weathers:. (the most popular ENB listed).Users are free to choose and install the ENB of their choice, or no ENB at all. I've installed The Truth ENB because it is light-weight, simple, and retains a mostly vanilla color palette.

Simply follow the instructions on the mod page for installing the Preset.
